Empyema is a collection of pus in the cavity between the lungs and the membrane that surrounds it (pleural space). Empyema caused by an infection that spreads from the lungs and cause accumulation of pus in the pleural cavity. Infected fluid can reach a glass or more, which causes pressure on the lungs, shortness of breath and pain.
* Dry cough
* Fever and chills
* excessive sweating, especially night sweats
* Discomfort, anxiety, or feeling sick (malaise)
* Weight loss
* Chest pain
The goal of treatment is to cure the infection and eliminate the collection of pus from the lungs. Antibiotics, usually, prescribed to control infection. Please note, this disease should be treated by a surgeon.
