Legionnaires Disease is one type of pneumonia which can affect anyone, but that primarily affects people of advanced age, illness, immunosuppression, smoking etc.
This is caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila and related bacteria are found naturally in environmental water sources such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Can also be found in the condenser, the evaporation of spas, and cooling equipment.
Bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease, including the genus Legionella. There are about 35 species of Legionella are known to produce disease. Legionella species are commonly found in aquatic environments. They can survive for several months in wet environments.
Symptoms : The disease usually starts with a headache, muscle pain. These symptoms are followed by high fever (up to 40 -40.5 degrees C). Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea also can occur in patients. On the second or third day, dry cough and chest pain began to be happening. Shortness of breath is often reported. Most patients suffering from pneumonia, a condition where the lungs fill with fluid or pus.
Treatment for Legionnaires Disease : Antibiotics are used to prevent spreading the infection. Treatment begins to prevent symptoms, without waiting for laboratory results
