Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP)

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) occurs when the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle does not close properly. During MVP, the valve stand out (prolapses) upward or back into the atrium. MVP sometimes causing blood to leak backward into the left atrium, a condition called mitral valve regurgitation. In most people, MVP is not life threatening and require no treatment or lifestyle changes. But some people with MVP, however, require treatment.

Although MVP is a lifelong disorder, many people with this condition have no symptoms. When diagnosed, people may be surprised to learn that in fact suffering from the condition. When signs and symptoms do occur, it is usually due to blood leaking backward through the valve (regurgitation). MVP symptoms can vary greatly from one person to another. Symptoms tend to be mild, develop gradually.

Signs and symptoms of Mitral Valve Prolapse, including:
1. Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
2. Dizziness or lightheadedness
3. Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, often when lying flat or during physical activity
4. fatigue
5. Chest pain is not caused by a heart attack or coronary artery disease
