Psoriatic Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints (arthritis) that occur in people who suffer from psoriasis on the skin or nails. The disease is similar to rheumatoid arthritis, but did not produce specific antibodies such as rheumatoid arthritis.
The cause is unknown, but suspected to involve genetic factors. Usually people with psoriasis have a greater likelihood to suffer from arthritis.
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that is often found, which causes red blotches on the skin. Approximately 1 in 20 people with psoriasis will develop arthritis. At about 75% of cases, arthritis is preceded by psoriasis.
This disease can occur in various forms. Arthritis usually mild and involve only a small part joints. In some patients, the disease is severe and usually affects the fingers and spine. If it involves the spine, the symptoms will be more like ankilosing spondylitis.
Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis
- Nail abnormalities or skin lesions due to psoriasis (scaly skin becomes red and crusted areas, which may be accompanied nail holes)
- Swelling and joint pain (arthritis), usually in the joints fingers and toes, but can also in other joints
- Wrist pain, knee pain, hip pain, elbow pain, ankle pain
- Pain and swelling at the site of the bone tendon junction
- May involve the Achilles tendon.
Diagnosis
Physical examination showed skin lesions accompanied by swelling and tenderness in the joints. X-ray examination can be carried out joint.
Treatment for Psoriatic Arthritis
Medication non-steroidal anti-inflammatory or a salicylate given to reduce pain and inflammation of the joints.
Several effective drugs to treat rheumatoid arthritis are also used to treat this disease. Among them are gold compounds, methotrexate, cyclosporin and sulfasalazine. Sometimes steroids are injected directly into affected joints.
Other drugs are etretinat, which is usually effective in severe cases but has serious side effects, because it can cause congenital abnormalities therefore should not be given to pregnant women.
Etretinat settled in the body in a long time, so women should not become pregnant during treatment or at least 1 year after the drug is stopped.
